Description
I uploaded a new file (HDRI-Test-1F.jpg) to my gallery. My first one yesterday was hurried as I was trying to get ready for work. After coming home and looking at it more I thought is seemed too dark and the glass sphere did not seem right. Sure enough, I had an unrealistic index of refraction in the materials setting. I also had the lighting set to only 75% brightness. I tweeked some of the other materials setting and re-rendered. It still came out a little darker than I liked so there is some brightness/contrast adjusting in Photoshop. Anyway, the glass sphere looks much better now. I had typed in 1.15 instead of 1.5. It now looks more real and solid with the correct higher IOR. (OR it is RI?)
Weird that I have had this software for about 3 years and never got around to trying this feature. I really like the realistic effect. I would like to try and make my own SF/F environment maps.

MUCH better this time! The refraction looks more real now and the lighting is getting way better. Awesome job.... :) chachi ps-try doing HDRI images that have no reflection of transparancies....things start to look very real.

Thanks for the comments. It helps when you have the right numbers in the materials settings. BTW, this was modeled and rendered in C4D XL R8.2. THe light probe file is the "kitchen" one available at a couple HDRI sites. I used Radiosity set to a Diffuse Depth of 2. I think a setting of 1 is equivalend to ambient occusion (AO). My program, at least my version, does not have a specific AO setting. THe default Diffuse Depth is 3 which I think makes for longer render times. For my understanding Radiosity and AO are similar in effect, but distinct. Radiosity is supposed to be more accurate, but AO is faster to render. In most cases I guess AO is good enough. Anyway, this was sorta of a first time test of the feature. I also added some noise in some of the materials Diffuse channels and even 1% noise in the table top so that it would not look too perfect. Now I want to research and see if I can make my own light probe images. And, of course, to do this with more interesting models and scenes. Like I said, this was sorta a "slap somthing together and test the feature." I was really surprise how photorealistic that it came out. Either I got lucky or this kind of rendering simply produces more realistic results. Of course this took 15 minutes to render even with the small amount of simple geometry in the image. Then again, photorealism should not be the only goal.
