You right of what you say. But the photo people will say that film is the best for black and white. Doing it in photoshop is not the right way for them. I going to shoot a roll of color and a roll black and white to see if that is true. I just do not know. I donot see the greatness in black and white. Yes the old timers did it in black and white because that all they had. [saw a Russia Doing color slides in 1910. Can not find his name lol] Got to move on like the Russia.

That's so analytical Meredith! :-) I guess there are occasions where B&W is much better than color when for example you do not want to be distracted by extraneous information. Some portraits tend to be better B&W (my opinion) coz B&W brings out the character of the subject in its starkness with no embellishment of colors. As you alluded to in your comments B&W emphasizes the shapes of the subject focusing our eyes of the beholder on the inter-relationship between the underlying forms etc.. Having said that I still love colored photographs and I prefer to saturate the colors of my photographs to give them an extra edge and appeal.. :-D Thank you for sharing your observations.. very interesting topic.

Hey...I'm a blond. but male...that's different, huh? lol Prefer the color myself. Generally do I think.

Well, I'm brunette and today I have changed my mind and prefer the colour one. It's certainly an interesting observation about people groups. You should ask how many of these people dream in colour or black and white.

I like the color in this one.... The green and colorful plants make it so refreshing. Aloha

That looks like paradise, although I suppose that's full of critters and a few quicksands too. 8-) Normally, I prefer colour photographs. Life is full of colour and it's a pity not to show it. However, there are times when a black and white shot works better, whether is for mood or an effect you're looking for. The first scenes of 'The wizard of Oz' and 'The elephant man' are good examples of this. So I still like the colour one... unless you want to use the b&w for a background and you are after some special effect...

"Capability" is the word from English Gardens I tried to remember. This has a lot of capability to absorb a lanscape architects advice.

Gorgeous plants. Super shot.

I'm a painter-- the liquid, gooey stuff not some CG program. I like color, as it conveys an extra level of information. When limited to BW, an image also has to limit the amount of information it will convey. Sometimes this works in the favor of the creator, say in images of nude women or battle scenes. On the other hand, Moms Nature is an egotist who went ot all the trouble of creating all those pretty colors and how dare you turn the Saturation down to Zero? It's not nice to fool with Moms Nature. There is also the matter of the complexity of the image. Color's extra level may mean the difference between an understandable but crowded image and a pandemonium. On the other hand, if one's intention is simply a study of textures and overall forms, then the simplification of de-colorization can be an asset (again, see "naked women"). (Which I like do do.) (A lot.) (Seeing naked women, no simplifying images. Just that I'd clear that up.)

Hmm. Not to be a fence sitter.. but I like both... For differnt reasons.. Like the Lush Greens and the light play on the plants... The other I like the detail and again the Light play...Excelent Picture(s)

WOW, awesome shot! love both versions very much - you are indeed a VERY talented photographer!

ah going into analytics, Meredith..lol... and yet I prefer the colored one once more, as I am a fan of all sorts of growing green... you are right though, in b&w the textures pop out more...smile

Tropical paradise indeed! Lovely capture and put me with the 3D graphic artists for liking the color! ;)

Both of them are fantastic! Everyone should know that BW photographys are more difficult to be taken! Your BW one got a fabulous light and shadow play! Bravo, Meredith!!!

As a Druidic lover of that which groweth green, I prefer the black and white for purely artistic reasons.

as an artist it really depends on what i wanted to achieve as an image . the color would be great for my el tigre or shiboan characters.the bottom bw reminds me of the old tarzan movies. so i would have to say both are cool in their own right. hugs

Very interesting (I like the color better :)!!

I personally prefer to take the Black & White image first and then go to PSP-9 and colorize it myself. That way I get the best of both worlds. The super rich detail of BW and my favorite color (which is usually blue). Makes for a very weird looking forest but real lovely water and sky. Note: This doesn't work so well for shots with people in them. They all look rather cold and a bit smurfy. Anyway, enjoyed your analysis immensely Mere. I had never made that preference connection myself before now. Thanks for the insight! Hugs from Dave :^)

That decides it. I'm not the photographer type of guy. I like the colours!

well myself I do believe it's the way one grew up (not always of course)but I'm from the B&W generation and to me it's alway s still lovely then came color and wow! I got to feel like I was missing something for sure however I said all that to say this it depends what the photo is! some looks better in B & W still: what ever tickles your funny bone I guess : lovely place mere:

Hard to pick between them. Too much like comparing apples and oranges. Put them on a gallery wall and they'll both sell. You do everything really well.

"PS And before anyone asks whether Im a 3D graphic person or am I a photographer, Im neither Im a blond!! ;-)" -- LMAO!!! If I had to choose a preference between the color & the b&w, I'd be hard pressed to do so; they both have their merits. This is coming from someone who LOVES to take pictures, but who is a lousy photographer, so my opinion might not be worth very much! :P :P However, I have spent ages at photo.net, and reading the comments & suggestions of the photographers there -- pros & amateurs alike -- helped me to see specific things in photos. The color photo is very rich, and I love the variances of the green hues. The black and white offers beautiful contrasts. They're both very lovely. :D

Wonderful pathway photo!!!
