Description

The day at the lion farm Bona Bona was a huge success and we all enjoyed it very much. For more behind the scenes stories (uncensored) and photos, visit our forum thread please.

I decided to deviate a bit from the usual lion photo and show the African wild dog which also occur on the farm. Edit: These animals are endangered and are bred in captivity to increase their numbers.

Oh my....these, too are beautiful creatures! Quite different from the canines here, of course--I love those big ears and the markings are amazing! So when these are on a farm....are they still then wild or do they become tame with generations toward humans? Our wolves, of course look more like a husky breed while these have a look all their own. Are they ever captured and tamed or cross-bred with domestic breeds?

how very marvelous! These would be so interesting to see. Are they like coyotes and made into companions if taken from the den before their eyes are open.

Lovely capture Piet. These dogs are quite rare - hopefully their numbers are increasing. I only get to see them when I DON"T HAVE MY CAMERA! LOL Oh well. They are exceptional pack hunters and run their prey into the ground with exhaustion. Lovely composition.

As usual these are marvellous captures of captivating creatures ... the nearest we have here are foxes, and I even like them [and loathe foxhunters!] Thanks for a fascinating glimpse of your world. Mike

One of these dogs didn't leave a battle unscathed, as evidenced by the loss of the top of one ear. ...a GREAT picture!

They are very beautiful and unusual looking dogs. With their long thin legs they must be very fast. So many unique animals you have shared with us. Thanks Piet.

I bet they are really fast. I had a dog before that had skinny legs like these and she was quicker than greased lightning. superb captures Piet and I like your avatar

what an unusual unique creature...thankyou for sharing and thankyou for the explanation...so...they are behind a fence? Is there a reason for what looks almost like camouflage? coloring? Is it to blend in with their background? Too many questions...sorry.

Great captures of these variegated creatures, Piet! I'm not going to join the chorus of admirers and call these animals beautiful or marvelous. The dogs don't exactly look like your friendly neighborhood mutt. Admittedly, they are a masterpiece of natural evolution, and appear to be predatory scavengers, built for speed. The large ears indicate fine hearing instruments.

I'm more than happy to "join the chorus of admirers". For one - all animals are beautiful and if only in their own way. And being dangerous does not disqualify them in the beautiful department, or did I miss something? Great capture!
