Description

Battery Thomas shows the modernization program for U.S. coastal forts begun during the Spanish-American War of 1898. Note the original red brick wall of the fort's outerworks and the grey concrete of the battery completed during World War I. Battery Thomas was armed with two "quick firing" 4.7 inch guns overlooking the mouth of Mobile Bay. These guns would cover a minefield. This was a good site for naval mines to be controlled. The Confederates sank the ironclad monitor USS Tecumseh at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864 with an electric mine (a torpedo in Civil War terms) detonated from this site. Thus prompting Union Admiral David Farragut's order, "Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead!"

I have vague memories of Ft. Morgan. I live only about a hour away and visited it with a friend years ago. Great historical perspective on this unique site!
