Description
We were a group of ten grown ups watching comet McNaught setting this week. After it had gone below the horizon the tail showed up like smoke rising from a bush fire. No matter how hard I tried I could not capture this phenomenon with the camera in all its glory. I edited these two photos and played mostly with lighting and contrast in an attempt to reproduce what everybody agreed to have seen with the naked eye. The B&W was converted when I realized it contained unwanted false colors. I agree the photos are of questionable quality but I want to share the sheer size of the tail visible to us. You may check the link above to see how authentic my captures compare to other people's. This was certainly a Joyous Magnificent Red letter day for me!

you are a LUCKY man when we could have seen it on the north of the planet (all hanging upsite down from your point of view) there was rain and storm and many clouds but your image made us see it anyway and yes. we are upsite down from it very much

Thanks for the pics - my wife an I saw it last night for the first time (we are in NZ) much better than Halley's comet! and we will remember it forever. Its great to see more pics of it though. Cheers.

Great capture of the comet on the left, and what looks like lights from the aurora australis in the photo to the right. Just beautiful! You were most alert and fortunate to snap these shots.

I'd be happy with any quality at the moment, skys have been cloudy now for some time, although the quality is below your normal standard, these are great captures of a spectacular event, I like the fact you reconized the second capture the colours were not true & converted to b/w Stuart

Don't worry about superior quality when trying to catch Mom Nature's mysteries, Piet. She is a difficult model to work with. These are super captures!

Don't worry about the quality Piet. It's really very interesting to see both of these shots. But what's more incredible, is the one in black and white, that make thought to a Northen Light !!!!! Splendid and magic effect. What colors did that have before the conversion in black and white ? When I think that in february 2006 I gone in Lapland with the secret desire to could see and shot a Northen Lights.... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ! Never seen one ;o(((((( Natural beauties as Comets and others are really a gift for our eyes. I'm very happy to see your shots Piet, really. Thank you so much my friend. Hugs
