Hi, my name is John Martzahn, alias BeyondVR. I live in Davenport, Iowa, the largest community of an area known as the Quad Cities, straddling the Mississippi River. I have been married to the same woman forever (since 1969; do the math). I spotted Bryce 3D in late 1997, and got my first computer. A few weeks later I bought Poser 2. I was very happy creating 3D art, and I never planned to do any modeling, but...
I learned how to model using Anim8or, and still use it the most. Anim8or is robust, and handles the large files I create easily. It lacks many advanced tools, and I use Hexagon 2 and Shade 8 to supplement it. I also have Carrara, and someday I'll open it ;) For my Renderosity store I have created kitchen items and automotive tool sets, but my principal love is doing WW2 ships. My WW2 Destroyer, the Bryce version of which I sold to DAZ3D, has become the most popular WW2 warship on the Web. In the fall of 2007 I added the WW2 Battleship and the Liberty Ship. I create many free addons for my models, and they are available at http://hometown.aol.com/helmzahn/addon1.html.
I plan to start on the Japanese WW2 aircraft carrier Akagi in December of 2007. I also have a light cruiser planned, and a PT-Boat. What comes next is anyone's guess. Thanks for stopping by!

You've done a good job with the paint but I tend to agree about the specular side of it.Also maybe the chromework could have done with some more specularity? One small thing that seems to look a bit odd is the sense of size with the buildings & well.Realise though that this is still a wip,so would like to see the finished article. Other than the fact it isn't paint but gel coat epoxy I would say this experiment worked. The contrast of the bright reflective chrome with the black wrought iron is delicate. The stiffness of the stone can still be sonorous as metal in a symphonic way. Fibreglass on the other hand is as reedy as Egypt.

Gelcoat epoxy vs paint? If you didn't know could you tell the difference from a picture? Exactly how would you do it differently in the shaders? Who cares? Anyway, I'm only guessing at the result you're after, but for me, I'd try a glossy in alt spec with a low Ks value (around 0.5 or less) and maybe use a spec only light to show up the car without effecting the rest of the scenery. Basically, just keep twiddling around until you get the desired effect. The car is the main focus of the composition and as such should really stand out and pop. The shadows are a little heavy for me too, but really like the composition of this render and I hope you keep on with it until you're happy with it (since the only critic any of us actually needs to satisfy is ourselves). So all up, nice work!
