Description

Like my previous post "Old Victorian House"
this picture was taken yesterday in the heart of urban decay, although 150 years ago it was in the finest of upscale prime real estate here in the city of Memphis. The vast majority of the elegant Victorian mansions that once dominated this area have long since been demolished. Often the only remnants of this faded glory are steps like these, rising up from a granite stone carved sidewalk that once lead up to a beautiful, magnificent structure. Although these steps can still lead the imagination back to the elegance and splendor of yesterday, in today's world they usually lead up to an empty field, empty that is unless you count the numerous beer and whiskey bottles, assorted trash and other abandoned items. But these steps, located near the intersection of Vance Avenue & South Orleans Street and once walked only by the extreme privileged, are barely noticed today as cars speed past instead of the fine horse and carriages of yesteryear.

What have we done to of so beautiful cities.... Sad to see the result of what the people call "civilisation".... Seeing these steps, it's easy to imagine what there where before, in this Victorian style. I think I'm not born in the the good period.... I'm shure that the age of the horse and carriages was made for me. In a time where everybody take the time... I really like these posts, and the comments you made Marshall. Hugs

"And this, too, shall pass..." Earth's linear time marches onward, relentless, compassionless and without vision. What a shame, and yet I see the pride in each crack and worn expression as an old woman who has led an active and beautiful life wears her wrinkles and age with a smile of wisdom. The young and the new will learn their lesson in time as well.

So full of symbolism and mood. What a pity this is the way most of the splendor of yesteryear is vanishing, leaving only cracks where there was beauty and elegance - these steps now serve as a bridge to the past.

Yep terrific pic and so well said. As an urban explorer myself, I often ponder this same problem. Its kind of human nature isn't it. We build stuff, polish it, show it off, love it....and then suddenly something new metaphorically comes along that takes out eye......and the old love is thrown to the wind as quickly as possible. Well seen and capture! Love the crumbling and cracked steps. Looks like a good place to sit and contemplate the past.
