Description

A silverback gorilla in the flesh is an awesome thing to behold and this picture does not do the animal full justice because you can only get a true idea of how wonderful it is a first hand.. For me for it to be in the wild would be something of a lifelong goal... This was the big Silverback at Bristol Zoo who had managed to sire a little one last year, his mate it was discovered had cataracts, and was thus not able to see his courting rituals of raised eyebrows etc, anyway the happy event did take place after surgery to remove her visual problems, and I will post one of the Mother and baby another time.. All species of gorilla are seriously endangered, even today the bush meat trade, logging, and encroachment on habitat despite well publicised conservation projects..

Yes they are endangered and seriously . . . Your shot should also remains to all of us that a woman, Dian Fossey, spent most of her time to protect the gorillas and was killed . . . . . . Again thanks a lot for all your contributions and your excellent picts my friend . . .

It is a superb capture, Danny. Such a powerful Silverback. I share your feelings about seeing these creatures in the wild. It is good they are breeding at the Bristol Zoo. The gorillas must be in good circumstances.. So glad the female had treatment for her visual problems. Cannot wait to see the capture of Mother and baby. Wonderful work. Thank you. Diane.

One of those moments we share history for a second with a primate kinsman. Your control over the black/grey tones is just great.

Oh, my gosh, this is magnificent. The photo is tremendous and so is the subject. Yes, it would be lovely if they could be free and not threatened. Why do humans feel they must dominate and control everything and if they can't, they kill it for profit or out of fear? Such a wonderful photo you've done.

Beautiful detailed shot! They are impressive and fun to watch because so many of their mannerisms are similar to humans.

I never see these magnificent creatures that I don't think of Diane Fossey. I hope you get to achieve your life long goal someday and see them in the wild. That would be so awesome!

I like gorillas more than chimps. I often wish we were more closely related to them. Especially since they are less violent in their behavior. Maybe we could have inherited that particular trait.
