Description

At one time there were 30 subspecies listed quite a few of these are questionable this african species is the least endangered, and 9 are now extinct from those 3 are possibly as few a 3 or 4 in the wild.. So fair to say extinct to all intents and purposes.. The name leopard derives from the ancient belief that the animal was a hybrid between a lion and a black panther (leo is Latin for lion and pard is an old term for panther). Leopards are also called panthers in some parts of the world, and the Panther is supposed to have a longer tail.. Most leopards are light tan or fawn with black rosettes, but their coat color is highly variable. There are smaller rosettes and spots on the head. As always thanks for taking time to look and any comments you care to make..

this is one GORGEOUS photo ... its sharp, yet there's a softness that I love. Beautiful work, as always, you do.

Awesome portrait. They have such a marvelously blocked head - not a massive bone structure but a sturdy one that is seen here. Where I come from, we have cougars that we often refer to as panthers because, I think, the head structure is so very similar as well as the body shape. Thrilling up-close look at this leopard.

A gorgeous creature that you captured so wonderfully here. Sad to read your commentary though... Again, well worth the ZOOM!

There is a special refuge just a few miles from my house that cares exclusively for a number of large cats captured from drug lords and rejects from foolish public who realize too late that a large beautiful cat, such as your exquisite example, are not suited as house pets! Sad commentary for many animals such as this.

Thanks again Danob, for your picts, and your comments. We will never be enough people to say how wildlife is so important to preserve in order to also preserve human life. I really appreciate, your pictures of course, but most of all the way you share it with us . . .
