Description

This image was created using Ultra Fractal for an exhibition in the UK. The idea behind this image was to create something that associated fractal mathematics with nature. This image represents the way in which plants use Fibonacci numbers and spirals as they grow and gracefully unfold their leaves, each one spreading out to find enough space for sunlight. Finding particular inspiration from spring growth, I coloured the innermost part of the flower a vivid pink to contrast with the dark green, whereas the white and light green outer areas where chosen to represent the younger growth that has not yet taken on full colour. Thanks for viewing Heather

This is so exquisitely composed and rendered Heather. I love the natural beauty of it. This is a real treasure and will be wonderful for the exhibition. I also love how you explained the math by the way it relates to natural shapes. Thank you for posting this! :)

Fibonacci numbers....where on the keypad WILL THEY GO??? I was jist gettin the hang of 1-9...Oh Gates HELP me! This is abo-so-loot-lee fractal-ific lee perfect. Scale of 1-10, its a 34. Your one Phenomenal PHractal-Momma! (i mean that in the most add-motherable way!) fav.

This is absolutely wonderful, looks so simple yet is so complex. The composition is so well balanced, every detail adding to enhance the pure formalisms. Fantastic! Went right into my favs. Uhm just one thing: those plants do not "use" those numbers. Our mind - based upon the axioms and logic of what we call "math" - "sees" them as if they were using those numbers in a specific way. In fact, even numbers do not exist at all outside the premises of our minds and logic (although the latter is sometimes still vividly disputed between philosophers and mathematicians). A mind with another logical and thus axiomatic base access to (mathematic)"reality" would (probably) come to a totally different conclusion about those plants. Anyway, a wonderful fractal! Cheers, Valerie :)

Your postings are a gift, Heather. I won't sing the technical praises I don't understand half as much as you do -especially after reading Discordia Anima's comment!- but you always manage to cloak the numbers in a veil of beauty and sensibility. Your spring flowers unfold in the sweetest way. Congratulations on the exhibition!

Stunning fractal, reminds me of a roman cabbage I once ate/admired, if you have never seen one before you have to see if there is an image available on the web, they are the most fractal cabbage i've ever seen truthfully and a true stunning work of natures art, awesome work Heather and glad to see you mathing it again :,)

Hi Heather! This is a fantastic furry plant. Many of my favorite organisms are structured "using" Fibonacci numbers. (I am right now conducting an experiment to teach a venus flytrap how to do quadratic equations using the formula. It's comming along slowly but the plant is already factoring the polynomials quite nicely, so it looks possible. The darn thing is always saying, "Gimme a bug first!" As soon as I succeed, I'll let you know and you can give the data to Discordia.) Anyway, beautiful pic!
