Description

You know now I a fake with birds. I thought I know them somewhat but kjpweb knew what they was and others too lol. Sorry about that. I know nothing but they have feathers. None around here have feathers and fur. They are "down under" have that and I not there to photo them. I do know they are Great White Egrets for that the same type bird that flow into the tree close to me and I photo him and posted hin a few days ago. I saw him fly there at less three times. I do not know if it was the same one but He was in the same tree three times. Here you see I did take the time to put on the 2x thing to double my 200 to a 400mm len. I saw them as I was driveing on the road and saw hundreds of white things way off in the woods. I thought it was those worms things that spin webs in trees but I know it was too early in the year for this. When I put the len on the camera and looked I was amaze at what I was. Here you see just a few of them and this one have one of the Great White Egret sideways so you can tell what it is. I have no ideal why they are in trees. Look like all of them are in trees. I almost did not post this thinking no one cares about birds in trees but this is strange to see this type of birds in a tree much more to see hundreds in trees. They most the time in low water or flying. kjpweb please tell me why??? someone please tell me why???? thanks for looking and comments

Dear Jock, After my weekend off from flight training - which turned into a catch up with work weekend and was anything but free time for rest, Im running a little behind on things here at Renderosity, but I hope to catch up by morning!!! Its really been a blast and a lot of fun, but the hours are starting to get very long!! Ill almost be ready to get back to work so I can rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-) While Im on vacation and doing pilot training, Im going to need to continue doing a lot of cut and pasting with just a tiny little real comment added!! Im really sorry, but I just dont have much time right now to write my usual wacko stuff! Ill be back on March 3rd!! I can't help it explain it, Jock. As I said on the previousegret picture, I've never seen them in trees. It's a real mystery. We'll have to see if some of the bird experts have any ideas!! I'm sort of like you - I know they have feathers and that's about it!!!! ;-) Super photo and I'm glad you didn't try to get any closer!!! The swamp looks like a wicked place to be roaming around!!! Love ya!!! Meredith Meredith Elaine Wilson - MeredithLand

In Australia they called these birds "HERRONS", in Europe they are called "CRANES" and in America you call them "EGRETS" as for the reason why they are in the tree's...I have no idea, but if you really want know, why not do a google or wikipedia search ? Nice telephoto capture Jocko ! ~Cheers~

Maybe there are wild cats on the prowl and the birds went up into the trees to get away from them! Great shot, Jocko!!

I think they're smoking pot. A couple of my friends in high school got busted for smoking grass, and they were in a tree while they were doing it. So, like, there it is.

I got no idea why they are on the trees either, perhaps it is to be able to see predators or food better, maybe to do with mating or nesting or perhaps it is natural for them to have a high viewpoint to identify them to the rest of their colony and easier for take off. Or like seagulls on rooftops, they may be teaching their young to fly. Excellent capture of wildlife Jock, there must be lots of rare species in the area you live in.

The blue heron has a nest in a palm tree here. The ibises and greta wshite Egrets also roost in trees by the Hillsborough River. It keeps them above the gators and below the buzzards.

It is a mystery. I like evinrude and star4matiion's explanation. I don't think it is a result of global warming. Maybe the swamp floor had a mouse infestation and the Egrets don't like mice. Or maybe you were witness the the "2007 great crane fly in"

Jocko, nice capture of teh multiple egrets in trees! This is only a guess, but maybe they sometime rest on trees in this area to avoid some preditors. They still must spend much time on the water feeding, but in areas with trees nearby, going up in the trees any time they are not feeding may be safer than staying down low.

They do nest and raise their chicks in trees so who knows? Maybe they will be nesting here? I think it's wonderful!

Tallpindo actually has the same answer I was going to give. Because they are water fowl doesn't mean they will stand in water or mud all the time. In swamps and other wet areas they will take roost to dry out and look into the water for action. I've seen them build nests in trees here by the river and they like to roost in the tallest branches over the water and watch their domain before gliding down to fish. Keeping out of the predators way is a survival skill and these birds are crafty and resourceful. Good shot. btw, here is some information on our California egrets/herons that I found... "However during breeding season, it is very common to see colonies of great egrets and great blue herons nesting side by side in the same tree. It is hard to believe, but these long-legged birds actually nest in the tops of tall trees on the California mainland. Nesting in trees is a good strategy for protection against predators, but a challenge for large, top-heavy birds with very long legs. They build a nest platform from large sticks and generally lay three to four eggs in early spring."
