Description

This photograph was taken just a couple of days ago. While most rhododendrons bloom here in May, this winter-blooming variety comes out to tease us in February. As far as I know, it only comes in just the one color. I was fortunate to find this one looking so good - they're pretty much past their peak this late in March. The rhododendron is Washington's official state flower. There are some native species that grow wild in the woods here! They get to be about 20 feet tall, and have a fairly sparse and leggy form. (I'm not a botonist, I've just seen 'em!) As you can see from the photograph, we had a beautiful sunny day here on Sunday. Today we had snow mixed with rain, and it was one of those damp, chilly days that just seeps into your bones. Around here, that's a sure sign of Spring. They say if you don't like the weather in Seattle, just wait ten minutes!

Very beautiful. I love those deep blood red rhoddies you see here. The sky was grey, the sun was shining and it was snowing, go figure. Go to love the Pacific Northwest.
