Description

Just a quick render before I head into hospital tomorrow. This is a study of a character I've been working on for a comic project that's been burning in my head, on and off, for about 14 years. He is Mr. Lees, an associate of a mysterious group of individuals who approach the hero of the story with a lucrative offer... I'd tell you more, but that would spoil the fun of the story when I eventually get round to writing and illustrating it!! The figure is Apollo Maximus (original version, though I plan to update this guy to the 2007 update), texture is General Ultimus by Rawart, shirt is from the 1800 costume at Poserworld, and the background is the Backstreets by Stonemason (available at DAZ). Also used were face-off's excellent spollo real skin shader, and occlusion master. REndered in two passes (foreground and background), then comp'ed back together in Photoshop, before adding an overal sepia tone to everywhere but the eyes, and tinting them red. The two tone adjustments aren't a proposal for the final look in the comic - simply there for aesthetic purposes on this picture. All comments and crits welcome: I look forward to reading them when i get hoem in a week. :) jonthecelt

Get well soon :) Honestly,it's an intriguing face and very well done. The only thing you might want to take a second look at is that line of sepia around the neck (under the collor), and it's a bit along the underneath of the collor on the left side too,

Oh, I really like this character! Excellent masterful control of Poser and postwork imaging. Hospital? Hope its nothing bad. I too have old ideas from years back that I am now bringing forefront. Here's to hoping you continue with the Graphic Novel and that you'll post some of it here. Cheers!

critique group: this image really shows the strength of that texture and the versatility of apollo. this is one of the first apollo imags where i recognized the texture, but not the figure. the key? you've done things with his eyes i haven't seen before. they look very interesting, but not unrealistic. his expression is wonderfully full of malice. it's not overdone; it has just the right amount of emotion. and i think that the double render was worth it. i like the blurring and tinting of the background. the light is also very good, but the highlights on the upper part of his head are too harsh for the rest of the image. also, the ambient occulsion or raytraced shadow cast on his neck by his collar is rather grainy. since there's already a great shadow there, i'm guessing ambient occlusion is the culprit. raising the number of samples can make your ao less grainy, but it's a problem lots of people have with poser ao. the only other critique i'd have is his mouth. there's something odd to me about how narrow and high it is, but that could just be me. overall, he looks great. i'm looking forward to seeing him in action in the future.

excellent looking character. his eyewhites look odd cos 1/2 of them is red the other is whitish...as others have pointed out theres some funny texturin on his neck above his collar. the hair on his head is poking thru his ear, and for me his teeth should be darker-shadowed from his lips

Critique group: Now here's something you dont see every day. Definately not the usual standard render for a figure face. I enjoy the unique "grizzled" structure of aging and all the lines and marks. However, my one critique would be the nose. Though the face is rather "crinkly" the nose seems smooth against it. I'm not sure if there "is" a way, but to bring up the nostril sides and get more aged/ness into it would flesh it all out exceptionally.

Critique Group Did you use the AO node on the eyeballs themselves. I say this because they look just a little too glossy and saturated compared to the rest of the image. Although the AO won't compensate for it, it will darken up the outer regions of the eyes and make them more apart of the face as a whole. Unless of course you're going for that exact look.

I like the overall tone of the picture and the characterization is wonderful. The only things that I had noticed have already been mentioned. Very interesting character, makes me curious as to his story. Get well soon! :-)

Critique group: Great work on that face! Deliciously malicious. You might want to take another look at his shirt. A bit of texture to the fabric might increase the realism even more. I'd suggest giving it a bit of translucency and specular if you want to go for a dress shirt, or maybe a bit of a weave bump if the shirt should be more informal. The DOF is wonderful, and I love that shine on his bald pate. Well done, all in all. I'm looking forward to your story!

Wonderfully villainous! Very nice job with the tinting, although the shadow on the neck looks a bit dirty. Higher irradiance caching setting in the render would fix that, or of course you could smooth it in postwork.

Spooky looking guy! Great work on the character. I'm not sure how much detail you're planning to put into the comic itself, but I would like to see a good bump or displacement on both the shirt fabric, and on his hair. And the AO on the neck needs sorting, probably the sample size needs adjustment. But you may not be looking for that level of detail with a comic anyway? I shall look forward to reading it :-) Hope everything goes okay in hospital for you.
