Description

If you click on full view, you'll actually be able to see detail on those mountains! The Olympic Mountains are in Washington State, USA. This view of the mountains is looking pretty much due West, from a point several miles North of Seattle. (If this seems weird to you, check a map. Seattle may not be where you think it is. Many people believe there is nothing West of Seattle but the Pacific Ocean. It's actually pretty far from the ocean.) The tallest mountain in the range (Mount Olympus) is just under 8,000 feet, so they're not all that tall, but they sure are pretty! These mountains are part of what gives the Seattle area it's famous weather. Rain storms coming in from the Pacific Ocean drop most of their precipitation on the West side of the Olympic Mountains. The Hoh River Valley, which lies between the ocean and the mountains, gets about 145 inches of rain a year. (That's about 360cm.) "Oh!" you say "That can't be right!" Ahhh - but it is! It's the wettest place in the "lower 48." Temperate rain forest. Very pretty. Very soggy. Lots of moss. So most of the rain falls on the West side of the mountains, leaving those of us in the Puget Sound area with drizzle and fog and mist and sprinkles and generally gray skies. (The water that lies between my camera and those mountains is Puget Sound.) But ohhhhhhh - when the sun is out! Beautiful, don't you think? By the way. That interesting shadow down the middle of the picture is just a cloud shadow. It was really there - it's not the fault of the camera or the nut behind the wheel!

Beautiful just as it is...damp and drizzly :) I thought that Seattle was on Pugent Sound and that Pugent Sound connected to the ocean so that meant that Seattle was next to the ocean, lol See my train of thought? Thanks for setting me straight :)

This is gorgeous! A placid view and lovely compo. The cloud give it more depth I think and the mountains provide an interesting backdrop. From my office I can look out at our mountains in the distance, much like this and where the water is here, I see flat valley. This is a marvelous shot! Good job.

Absolutely beautiful shot, Tara.. Mood of total serenity.. I see it in my mindseye, glistening in the sunshine. I adore that you got the two tiny people on the shoreline, giving a scale to the vastness of this open water.. Mother nature in her finest silk gown.. Glorious work!! The "nut behind the wheel" comes up with top notch work ;-))) Super information too, a very good read. Happy night and Hugs. Diane.
