Description

This is my second picture, based on my first set (not counting a first test and following the tutorial). This first set was intended to master the basics. I laid a floor, erected a wall, and placed a lamp onto a stool. I was about to upload it, but I missed a story or rather a gag. Not until after the Yoga Bat did I get ideas. I wasted some time on a ghost (that may pop up later). Then I had ideas about treating the oil lamp as the sun. I abandoned the idea of a girl sunbathing, and rather bought a clock suite to have a sun dial. The picture did not appear complete, and that is where the mouse came in. Its pose links the background to the foreground. But I have considered a colorful woodpecker hammering away on this nicely textured wooden wall (thus missing that link). The stool is hardly recognizable after rendering. It stands at an angle with the wall. You can see the shadow of the lamp bottom on it, and you can see that the lamp has slightly sunk into the red plush. (Dangerous, isn't it!) I would have expected the lamp bowl to be round rather than polygonal. The mouse may not be placed accurately. It hardly fits on the ridge, and it was difficult to see what I was doing. Somehow positioning cameras was difficult, but I might have benefitted from using a temporary spotlight. Lighting is simple: a weak yellow point light in the oil lamp and an even weaker distant white light. I did pay great attention to reflections, but the result is below my expectations: no glossy wax on the wooden floor, hardly any metallic shine on the metal parts of the lamp and the sun dial. I considered trying some focus, but I considered it inappropriate here. The set was created using DAZ|Studio using elements from The Study, The Study Expansion Pack, the House Mouse and this sun dial from Fairytale Furniture - Once Upon a Time, all available from DAZ.

A good simple scene. I think the lamp is too bright compared to the rest of the scene. It overwhelms it. To get the reflections you want you may need to increse the specular on those materials.
