Description

When Brave Terry and I take people out to see the lava flow, our first question to them are do you have any medical conditions, asthma or heart problems that we should know about. We then check if everyone has more than enough hydration system and good shoes. Sunblock, dark glasses and a hat is advisable in the day walk. Night = lights. We prefer everyone walking with walking sticks/trek stick because of the very fragile/unstable terrain. It keeps your balance and helps in your hikes. We do carry 2-way radios and gps. We brief everyone where and what not to step on. We don't want anyone to fall as the lava rocks are like glass. Terry will usually lead and I'll be the last making sure no one is left behind or gets hurt. If its a day walk, we look for the strong heat waves. At nights, you can't miss the glowing lava. When we do reach the fresh lava ooze, we check the ground heat, lava in the cracks and stability of the surface we walk on. I will often spill water on the surface to see if the grounds are too hot. Listening and feeling the grounds you walk on is very important. "Know the Dangers!" . And "Common Sense is Not Enough" . And if everything goes well, it is a good hike. To Brave Terry and I, the most rewarding part is.......seeing our guest enjoying them selves and their facial expression. The Door is Open to anyone who wants to see the lava. Aloha and thank you for viewing

Awesone shot, as always, Errol. I'm not at all surprised to learn how careful you are; your attitude shows in your photos and comments. Thanks for the links. I now have them both bookmarked.

It'll be a few years at least, maybe more since I'm guessing my sons will be with us next time we're on Hawai'i, but I hope to take you up on that some day. These shots are all so fascinating. :)

I respect what you do but at my age and the increase in falls and clumsiness that has gone with the years, I think I'd rather read about these walks. I'm too clutsy to trust near flesh-searing heat. :-)

Magnificent shot ... sounds like you got it down pat on the precautions! Safety First! ..... It is very hard to believe that something this awesome could be so devastating. Well done Sharky_! TY as always!

WOW!! Thank you so much for all the explanation! That made it a lot easier.. I saw similar places in Japan about 10 years ago.. And i know how is thing is.. But what if some of your visitors didn't tell that he/she have any medical conditions! I know some are shy to say, then what! Well.. I guess its their problem then :P I really like the close up of this one here.. And I wish i can see it again in life.. Who knows, i might be one of your visitors :D Thank you again and have a wonderful day Mr. JOE

Probably the best of the bunch, it's fluid and solid at the same time. And some common sense advice, too--you don't want an accident with that stuff.

Wow, you really covered the waterfront in your text! Good to know this stuff! Oddly, the hot lava in this shot resembles a backlit autumn leaf, with all the veins and textures. Superb capture!

Nice form in this one...cleanly defined texture between liquid and solid. Erie patterns in the flowing liquid. Great links buddy, always good to bone up...soon I will take the walk. Aloha~
