Description

For those who didn't see the 1st version of this picture, here's where this came from, copy+paste from the 1st: "I was reading an article the other day about Chinatown and all those little neighboroods where immigrants bring with them a little piece of their own country, their traditions and life style. And I thought: what if animals do it too?" I changed many things in this version, now it's more like I had envisioned it. Most of the changes were pursuing more realism or for composition sake... and one special change... - Moved the characters from the center and balanced their new position with the background - New ground - New background - New seagull - New clouds (these ones are metaclouds) - Water more transparent - Water geometry redesigned (wider, lower, different waves pattern and bumps on the side) - More fish in the water and other stuff (coral, etc) - Foam added - Pole tilted and un-centered - Pole retextured to have moss mixed with wood - Sun rotated so that we see the whole shadow of the pole and seagull - And, very important, a skull added on the ground. The skull serves as a link to the next two pictures. Now, the series is clear in my mind. And so is the message. This should be a "trilogy". You will understand the role of the skull in the 2nd and 3rd pictures. Thanks for watching!

Very cool! I like this one better! The lil cloud over the water makes it. I can't wait to see part 2 and 3.

Yes, I liked the first, but this one is definitely 'New and Improved'. Nothing to crit here, lots to like however. The realism of the gull and his world is exceptional. Good Work!

I love it.Just the kind of things I like. Concept and execution are great.Nice composition, particularly the diagonal connecting the "water chunk" with the cactus and the mountain through the sand "wave". The only thing that bugs me a bit is the degree of uniformness in the supposedly random sand dunes. Is this what Vue thinks is random? I would expect some flat areas and one or two larger hills etc. (But if I was you I would leave it just as it is, it works) PS it may not be part of the image in your mind, but one fish half poking out of the side of the water would add yet another surrealistic touch, and after al,even in a self contained community there is always someone curious about the outside... PPS I dont seeit as cute, I think its a bit sad and slightly menacing but that's probably just me. I'll shut up now and go and do my own surrealistic things!

wow. i love all the improvements, except the sculpted sandy ground. your desert looks very american west, and that ground doesn't go with the scrub and cactus and red earth. i'm sending you links to reference images, if you're interested (i can understand if you like the look of this better). but every improvement you made really makes this even better. especially the cloud. kudos!

Thanks for your comments! :-) - ArtPearl: yes, a fish poking out of the water "wall" would be a nice touch, I didnt think of that! I did think of one jumping out the water but I found it disturbing (too "eye catching") and so I removed it. - cobaltdream: You have a sharp eye... :-) I went to www.flickr.com and saw dozens of reference photos before making this picture. In the end, I didn't like the reality! I prefered my "dream". My dream may not exactly match one single specific desert but it has references to several types and for me that was sufficient to convey my message. Again, thanks!

Really nice work. There was something I liked about the rocks in the first version but there is much that I really like about this version.

What a great idea - you've brought it to life really well! The gull looks very content with his (her?) own little slice of heaven in the desert! Very well done!

You make me start to like surrealism. Great picture, clearly an improvement to the first version. Well pictured. Great picture, I really like to see the other two.

Extremely clever, and very well executed. Flawless, and I really like the cow skull opposite the lively pocket of ocean surrounding the sea bird.

After having viewed both, I like elements of each one. I like the surrealistic comp of the first one, and how the cloud edged are cut off so that it literally looks like a chunk of water and air was cut out and placed there. This second version looks more like an intentional illustration, and less photographic; and sets up the transition into your next illustration (I'm viewing them out of order and reviewing retroactively, or something... sorry; long weekend here). The way the eyes are led around by the wavy sand is great. Personally, I prefer the less populated water from the first version, but I see how busy water and coral transitions into the next pic, having looked ahead. Your work makes makes me think about what I'm looking at, even when I misenterpret it. :)
