Description

This newel post is in the lighthouse keeper's residence at the Mukilteo lighthouse. (Same place I took the picture of the Fresnel lens and the lighthouse itself.) The background was horrid - trust me - you didn't want to see it! When I did the black background, I realized how much it brought out the beautiful quality of the wood. The Mukilteo lighthouse was built in 1906, so this newel post has had 101 years of loving care. One of the volunteers saw me taking this picture, and gave me the funniest look. "Weirdo with a camera," undoubtedly. That's okay - I'm getting used to people looking at me like I'm a nutcase! Handheld, available light.

You're right, this is beautiful wood. Thank you for showing us, and not forcing us to see the horrid background. :-) Well done.

What a beautiful wood. And you have captured it so well. And you made it so, that nothing would disturb the nice look of it. Bravo !!!

I love your newelest post, it really does jump out at you with the background blacked out and shows of the fine wood and woodwork to it's greatest advantage. "...The dream of living in a lighthouse baby, every single day. The dream of living in a lighthouse, the white one by the bay. So if you want to make my dreams come true, You'll be a lighthouse keeper too. We could live in a lighthouse The white one by the bay,hey hey. Won't that be okay. Yada tada ta ta ta...." It is a wonderful capture, Tara. Many people would walked past this work of art without even noticing. I am so glad you did not. I adore wood, as my Dad before me did.. The newel posts in my home are carved from pitch pine, 109 years of loving care. The man who carved them, signed them!! His signature is clearly visible today :-) He must have been proud of his work. I cherish them.. Hugs. Diane.

Excellent postwork in this image, T! You spent extra time in exorcising the original background for a black one, which really brought out the rich colors and lighting effects in the newel. A beautiful bit of woodwork. Also, TwoPynts has come up with another extensive litany to pleasure the masses. You should charge him for double parking.
