Description
Another shot of reptilian life forms (thank you, Star Trek, for that term), snapped 3/9/07, from alongside a lake shore deep in the bowels of the El Dorado Nature Center in Long Beach, California.
The slider at the top appears in fine fettle, but the shell on the old war horse at the bottom could do with either a visit to a dermatologist, a new carapace, or a sand blasting, followed by smooth sanding, followed by a primer layer, followed by a silver multilayer lacquer paint job.
And, keep on smiling during the coming work week!

Looks like the "old war horse" was tired of listening to the youngster brag on his paint job, lol. Great shot!

Funny comments by everyone and a darn fine image. My initial reaction upon viewing it was, "ribbit, ribbit." My wires must really be crossed, eh? Can you get a tricorder reading off that guy...?

Dear Harry... lovely shot. Let me tell you about the old one (who is probably not that much older than the other one here...). These turtles shed their "scales" as they grow. This guy doesn't seem to have visited the water lately and his lifting panels are drying and curling up. He's definitely been up to his nose in mude lately though so when he does get wet and wash the mud off, he'll reappear as a gorgeous, shiny-plated turtle. I've got some observations about this guy though. The fact he's been in the mud long enough for it to dry out like that on him is unusual, as well as the fact his diet appears to be completely off. As you can see, the stripe on the side of his head is not the vivid red or deep orange-red of the other one's. This stripe is an indicator of health and the diet injested (much like flamigos). They live in the same pond so I would figure they had the same diet but it seems the shedding one has been feeding on something else.

Another excellent capture!

Well, if MrsLubner's suggestion of diving back into his pond doesn't work, perhaps a good general purpose exfoliator my do the trick (it works wonders on my ageing skin!!) Another great capture in this wonderful series Harry, I look forward to more soon hopefully and will add you to my faves so I don't miss any in the future. xx

A very interesting photo! The contrast is quite marked. I never thought about them shedding, but of course it makes total sense. Excellent capture!
