Description
Fort Morgan, the guardian to Mobile Bay, was built in the early 1800's. The star shaped fort has seen its share of action. During the American Civil War the fort first fell to the Alabama Confederate Militia in 1861 only to be recaptured by Union forces again in 1864.
While the weapons and gun positions have changed over the decades, the fort's goal has always remained the same - to prevent enemy forces from entering Mobile Bay, a massive and beautifully picturesque natural bay.
The fort remained on active duty through the Spanish-American war in the late 1800's, and even on through World Wars I and II. But by the conclusion of the Second World War the times had passed for the need of such a fort, so it was deactivated for the last time and turned over to the State of Alabama.
Fort Morgan is located at the end of a long peninsula extending out into the bottom of the eastern side of Mobile Bay. While somewhat close to coastal tourist areas, it is definitely off the main tourist rout (no theme parks or water slides), so on a visit there you'll find very few people, if any. But spirits, well that's another story!
I've been visiting there for more than 25 years now, and each return provides new experiences and photographic opportunities.

Love this. The pov combined with the compo is marvelous! I also thank you for the history. I never knew any of the old forts were used during WWI or WWII so I really learned something. Great shot!

Excellent presentation and point of view! Love the deep rich colors and texture of the brick walls and floor. Your expert composition made that barrel the unexpected star of this photo.
