Description

This is a Sea Oat, taken on The Alabama Gulf Coast earlier this month, backlit by the setting sun. It's a salt tolerant plant that grows on the coastlines of the Eastern US, the Gulf Coast, and Caribbean. The plant is essential in the fight against beach erosion because the roots grow extremely deep (to secure freshwater), so their presense helps stabilize the sand dunes. After the destructive hurricanes on the Gulf Coast from the last 5 years, major restoration projects are now underway to increase the Sea Oat's presence there. Although a nice addition to any dried flower arrangement, it is extremely illegal to pick Sea Oats since their presesce now is so improtant. I can remember many years ago before the current wave of hurricanes when sections of the Gulf Coast beaches were so thick with Sea Oats that it resembled fields of grain associated with the midwest. When visiting, enjoy them, but don't take them home! Thanks, marshall

This is an awesome shot. I had to click on it when I saw the thumbnail because it reminded me of Galveston... turns out this isn't so far from there. Growing up I remember these in abundance and how irritating they could be when making your way to the beach for a swim. Hard to believe they are so thinned out now. Great shot.
