Description

"Fantasy, abandoned by reason, produces impossible monsters. But, united with it, she is the mother of the arts and the origin of marvels." ~ Francisco De Goya

Here is a revisit to a rainy day at Cumberland Island's Dungeness Mansion Ruins. I won't go into the history of it again, but if you missed my photos and commentary the first time around, they can be found HERE. {---link My reason for posting it is that an interesting link cropped up in the Photography Forum, Modern Ruins. {---link Renderosity members have been posting links to web sites that have images of urban decay and old ruins, a subject I find fascinating. If you have some time, why not go take a peek? I kept the image rather large so that you could see the details. I can only imaging how beautiful this palace of the Carnegie's was in it's heyday. Yes, that is a backpack by the fountain -- I am not sure who it belonged to. ------

This is a beautiful photo and a really amazing location. I must say I'm a bit dissapointed that this wasn't a picture of a crab. ;)

What a great place to explore! I guess Mr. backpack thought so too, since he left it during his exploration. grin Um.... I don't get that crab comment...lol.

Very beautiful! Isn't it a bit dark though (I'm not a specialist so I don't know well)? But it's gorgeous!!!

I can almost see the spirits of those who treasured this place as their home... faces at the windows, sitting in the manicured gardens, fancy, expensive cars pulled into the circle out front... No matter if a ruin is ancient or relatively new, they are equally haunted by their past. a stunning capture.

Ruins are great subject matter, and not easy to capture, to my experience. The atmosphere becomes key. At least, I think so. LOL I read your quote at least 3 times, and I still have no idea what it means, lol. Great pic Kortaloo. Have a wonderful weekend! -M :^) 998....... ;^P

Great Scott, Cumberland Island's own Stonehenge! Or is this the Acropolis in Greece? Although kinda dark, a fine panoramic view of the olde ruins, old chum.

A little newer than my usual favorites but the amount of history here makes up for the lack of age.

so lovely looking. I think the clouded day helps here so no stong shadows over take the image but shows the building as a whole

Makes you wonder why such a beautiful place was left to go to ruin. A lovely shot but sad too, all those lost memories.
