Description

St. Thomas a Becket Church ruins. [best viewed full size] This shot was taken at Heptonstall churchyard in my home county of West Yorkshire whilst out on a shooting day with Chrissy aka BibbyBear last week. Please see her gallery for more shots of our day out. Heptonstall churchyard is rare as it contains two churches; the ruins of St. Thomas a Becket and the still very much in use St. Thomas The Apostle. The ruins were built between 1256 - 1260 and named after the Arch Bishop Thomas a Becket, who was murdered in 1170. Thomas a Becket was made a saint in 1174. Several refurbs were made to the old chapel in the 14th and 15th centuries. During the civil war Heptonstall was a Parliamentarian supporting village, and when the Royalist army set up their guns ready to attack, the villagers covered the church in sheepskins to protect it from cannonball strikes. After many centuries the fabric of the old building began to deteriorate, and in 1847 a great storm destroyed the west face of the chapel. The new church of St. Thomas The Apostle was built between 1850 - 1854 alongside the old building, which further decayed to the wonderful ruin that it is now. This photo was slightly saturated to bring out the blue sky better, then a layer mask on the stonework, followed by slight dodge and burn to show the details in the stone a little more. My apologies for not being in the galleries recently. A lot of changes are happening in life at the moment and I just havn't had any time to spend here in R'osity. I am away from tomorrow until into next week, but I do promise to catch up with the galleries soon and see all the fantastic works that my friends have been doing. Hopeful to be back soon and thanks for looking. Any comments and critique are very welcome. Carl.

Welcome back! I may not know anything at all about saturation, layering, or dodge and burn, but I know when a photo makes me smile so, as this does! I also love this narrative history you have included.....more smiles ;) ;) ;) In total then, a shot I like very much........the sky and the textures on the old stone are wonderful. Thank you for this.

Excellent composition! The way parts of the ruin are framing other parts gives this an abstract quality that I like a lot. Nice work!

Carl I love it!! This was not an easy capture (I know!) as the sun was in the wrong place but you did a beautiful job in capturing the sky whilst still retaining enough of the textures in the stonework to make this shot work. Brilliant use of natural framing - you saw this shot before you even picked up your camera - proving to me that you have the eye of a great photographer. Now just figure out what all those buttons on your camera are for LOL!! Thanks for yet another wonderful day out and many more to come for us in the coming weeks and months. Big Hugs Babe xox

Wonderful presentation, you angle is quite dramatic. I love how dark the ruins are against the cool blue sky.
