Description
This is Tram number 60 in the fleet at Crich.
Johannesburg 60, with its bilingual signs in English and Afrikaans, was one of many originally built in this country for export to all corners of the British Empire.
If you look to the top of the picture you can see where the power comes from. This jumble of wires, once described as 'a mad woman's knitting' has also been rescued from all over the country. Look down at the bottom and you see the track. A shiny lacework of track runs through the museum, this as also come from many sources, including, Douglas(I of M) Glasgow, Sheffield, Newcastle, Darlington, Manchester, Salford, Leeds, Liverpool, Edinburgh, and Birmingham, to mention a few.
The track is laid to the standard gauge of 4'81/2"(1453mm) but some systems had a narrower or broader gauge.
Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make.
May the sun shine down on you where ever you are.
