Description

Two posts ago I showed you a collage made of small pieces of drawing paper painted with gouache and assembled to make little drawings. Here I started from already colored papers of various textures, that I cut with precise scissors, then pasted together with very little gouache added. This artwork represents Laura Bonnier, a friend of my comic heroin Silvia. Laura, as Silvia, followed university studies to become a natural history teacher. I shall continue with some other posts of Laura. Strangely I defined her in 1997, 6 or 7 years before the Laura of Daz. I was glad of the result, because in spite of the small size of the elements (the original art is slightly smaller than A4 size) the face of the young woman is identical to the already drawn model-sheet, and her shapes are very realistic. But this was the sole drawing I did with that method: it is a lot of work, and publishers to which I showed it were not interested. So I turned to more classic styles.

A good cutout style coloring. Solid planes of color with a slight hint of depth. A shadow beneath Laura's feet would've planted her more on the ground. Though I know the style here is supposed to neglect lines and shadows, a solid color cutout form below her feet would still be in character. Nice method of illustration, very creative!

I agree with RBlue, but let me allow 2 remarks. First, if you use commercial color drawing papers, the available range WAS ALREADY in 1999 very limited (and certainly much more limited now). To undertake this collage, I went to the biggest art shop of the capital of my country, and I spent much time trying to assemble sheets and see the result they gave together… I was not very satisfied in fact with these colors… Nothing in common with Adobe Illustrator where you can do exactly what you want, even the crude version 5.5 of 1995 has incredible possibilities. A second point, this drawing was one of my first ones; although I was a professional living of my art since 2 and 1/2 years, I had begun my artistic formation only 3 years before this drawing (I was forced to become a pro in less than one year)… So, I am guilty, LOL!… But I think that I can find some excuses… Today, I stay proud of this strange "painting", but now I have turned to other interests: comic tales, 3D… and photography during holidays.
