Description
I know I risk to be lunch , but your favorite agency MOUSSON TRAVELS & TOURS shows you the really of a country and his people. The Asian Giraffe Women exist only in Burma. All they come from Laikaw, a region forbidden to foreigners, are of PADONG tribe, which is part of the nation KAREN. The ones you see at the border of Thailand come from Burma, too. These you see here live in the Inle Lake. I saw the Giraffe Women for the first time in 1988, at the border of Thailand, in a "no mans land" controlled by Karen´s Guerrila Army. Since then, I am fascinated and I don’t stop to read and do research about them.

CONT... First, there are a lot of myths completely false. The rings are not made by jealous husbands who, in case of infidelity removing the neckless and they die. They are not made to protect tigers or to make women of the tribe so ugly who don’t want kidnap. My conclusion is that are a sign of difference of tribe, we don’t know why began, but today is the very identity of the tribe PADONG, making it unique in the world. Women can remove their rings (they make to show me) their necks don’t broken. According to researchers of the University of Chiang Mai, it is not the neck that grow, but the shoulders descended, giving this impression. The rings are put progressively and starts at 8 or 10 years. This is a moment that the girls waiting, it is the a rite of passage to become a woman. I cant guarantee that cause absolutely no pain because, obviously, I spoke with them always with translator. But I did not get the impression that it hurts, they were very at ease. What I can guarantee is that they feel beautiful and proud. More rings, greater the beauty of women. I count 32. There are also information circulating that they would be reduced to slavery, forced to show at tourists in a "human zoo"! I saw several groups and all living normally, with husband, children, all family in beautiful traditional houses. I can talk only bout what I saw. The "human zoo", depends on what side you think you are. These women take fun with a lot of strange and exotic people who come to see them. And, excuse me, but the world is enormous human zoo where people travel to see different people. One is always the "exotic" of the other. The greatest Human Zoo I know called Paris, where we sit on the terrace cafes to watch people ... This is a barbarity? I don’t allowed me to judge, We live in a society when the women do all the time surgerys to increase the breasts, lips, change the nose ...

I have been fascinated by these people since I was very young. I have read as much as I could get my hands on, trying to learn all I could about this practice of elongating the neck. This is an awesome shot and I envy you seeing them first hand. BTW, I think of them no other way than the same as you or me. They just have a different custom is all...

A wonderful commentary to this awesome photograph Mousson, I like your reference to the human zoo, like you say I think we are as exotic to them as they are to us, just different custom is all. Thank you for sharing, I really admire you for your journalistic cover of your travels. Bravo!!!!!
