Description
The medieval term 'Grosser' shows the origins of the grocer as being one who delt in anything by the gross, in essence a wholesale dealer.
Victorian grocers would buy in bulk and decant the goods into small weights. Often with items such as tea, they would also blend a number of ingredients together to obtain their own brands.
A vast array of goods would be available in shops such as this, dried foodstufffs, meat, tinned goods, luxury items, brushes, cookery items, fabrics and even whole dinner services. Windows would be beautifully displayed each season, goods would be artistically ranged according to both price and quality and the whole effect would be to entice customers into shops and therefore secure their custom.

Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make(I like fun captions).
May the sun shine down on you, where ever you are.
Today the East coast of the UK is expecting severe weather conditions, a tidal surge of 3 metres(10foot) is making its way South. My thoughts are with you. Stay safe.

When I was a child there were still shops that looked like this inside :-) (showing my age now!!)There was one very much like it here in South Africa, it looked like this until the early 80s. This is so wonderful I can almost smell the special smell that these sort of shops had...Oh the memories!!!!!!!!!!! Hugs Thank you for your lovely comments on all of my work I really appreciate your friendship so much:-)

When I see dry goods shops like this I always am flumuxed by how neat and orderly they were kept. And they dealt in so many different items ... it seems impossible to be so organized. Perhaps it had something to do with not haveing 75 people walking the aisles at any given moment of the day :-) I do like this shot. It has a good feeling to it. I saw the news about the tidal surge expected and saw pictures of the sandbags being issued. I am holding my breath... My thoughts and wishes are for a good outcome...

Like sylki has said "I can almost smell it", there WAS an unusual smell to this shop. You really do manage to get the colouring good on these sepia pictures Jeff its perfect. And once again, a great bit of information, you either know an awful lot of stuff or your good at doing your homework. ( or being 1 or maybe 2 years my senior you remember a lot lol. ) Its a good capture because if I remember she wouldn't stop sweeping, you must have got this nicely posed shot a few seconds after mine. Has she got her eyes shut ?
