Description

Mornin' Everyone *S* This image sort of comes from a comedic play written in 1675 by William Wycherly about a young country wife who travels to London and finds adventure. Obviously she hasn't gone to London yet :o) Here's a little more info if'n you're interested courtesy of Wikipedia. "The Country Wife" is a Restoration comedy written in 1675 by William Wycherley. A product of the tolerant early Restoration period, the play reflects an aristocratic and anti-Puritan ideology, and was controversial for its sexual explicitness even in its own time. It is based on several plays by Moliere, with added features that 1670s London audiences demanded: colloquial prose dialogue in place of Moliere's verse, a complicated, fast-paced plot tangle, and many sex jokes. It turns on two indelicate plot devices: a rake's trick of pretending impotence in order to safely have clandestine affairs with married women, and the arrival in London of an inexperienced young "country wife", with her discovery of the joys of town life, especially the fascinating London men. The scandalous trick and the frank language have for much of the play's history kept it off the stage and out of print. Between 1753 and 1924, "The Country Wife" was considered too outrageous to be performed at all and was replaced on the stage by David Garrick's cleaned-up and bland version "The Country Girl", now a forgotten curiosity. The original play is again a stage favourite today, and is also acclaimed by academic critics, who praise its linguistic energy, sharp social satire, and openness to different interpretations. A Beaufully done image Mina. Funny how opinions and rules change over time, how what was once taboo is now considered normal and accepted and vice versa

Damn those critics...I thought modernday censoring was rough! Gosh it must be the longest ban ever 1753-1924.! your image speaks of great talent, the colors is definately country like, and the inclusion of the nightsky with the moon and stars leaves quite a bit for the imagination to ponder on! Excellent artwork Mina! and a FAV too!

Lovely artwork Mina and the lesson was entertaining as well.I have always felt that when we begin to censor we set a dangerous precedent.I love to do collage work but I am very poor at it and always am inspired by your fantastic work to give it another go.So thank-you on all counts.Beautiful art!

She looks ready for adventure! Thank you for this morning's perspective on social mores. The pendulum swings wide, and it swings often! Sexual conservatism in the 50s and the sexual revolution of the 60s are not the end-all-be-all on that subject, historically speaking, no matter what they tell you!

seems as though there has always been a "religious right group" that wants to impose their idea of what is right or wrong on the public.the US is suppose to be a free country, but you can not tell especially in Texas with predominantly baptist controlling the state government.your depiction is outstanding and I bet I would enjoy reading the story
