Description

A close up view of Kilauea Iki's pit....filled with lava rocks and cinder from landslides. It could be dangerous standing where we are if another landslide had occurred. Hope our luck doesn't run out. Aloha and thank you for viewing.

Beautiful picture. I find it amazing trees grow out of lava rock. Cool! We put lava rock in our flower beds to keep out the weeds, and in our BBQ grills to cook over. Todd

Love how you can tell it's been some time given the regrowth around the pit. :)

I'm glad your luck held out, and that it remained dormant. :) Aloha!

Errol, do you know the average amount of rock that is displaced with each slide? Is this broken rock filled more with iron or pumice? I'm just curious as to the density of the rock under your feet. A very interesting shot. Do you think the mountain finds the all these people looking into its mouth an irritation?

Interesting capture of the dark rock-strewn abyss, Shark! Climb down and around this formation at one's own peril. Incidentally, if you say Iki's Pit real fast it sounds like Icky Spit!

I know your tolerance on heights and I bet this was a little spooky for you...but you got the shot and that's what matters....Thanks for the peek into the abyss. Aloha~
