Title: In Honour of Jacques Villegle
Series: South Market Street Project
Location: San Francisco, California
Date: November 14, 2007
Image: N07688M1c
Camera: Nikon D70, Full Frame
Commentary:
Before of Jacques Villegle there was Walker Evans who photographed
torn posters back in the mid twenties, but what Jacques Villegle did was very different
from Walker Evans. Jacques tears down posters that lined the street walls of Paris and back
at his studio he then reassembled the pieces to his artistic design, creating new images on a
very large scale.
Having obtained a book on the works of Jacques Villegle, I was exposed to more of his
work, appreciating his efforts and the result of his creative work. This in turn has affected
me in trying something different when seeking out locations with plastered posters.
At first I set out to photograph what interests me and then I start removing some of the
posters to expose the layers underneath while taking back home the removed posters for
reassembling at a later time. In the meantime this 80-foot wall that is 8 feet high
(20.3 x 2.03 meters) gave me plenty of material to photograph and a carload of possibilities.
Now to my previous photograph in this series, for I received an email requesting an
explanation to the work itself.
Abstract art is a form of communication that is not something everyone can understand,
especially if a work is not given a title by the artist. As for Rising Sun, I only came up
with a title when viewing the final full-frame image on the computer screen and it is in
reference to Japan, also known as the land of the rising sun.
As I choose the title, it was with the purpose to express my own thoughts that day as to
Japans economy, which may still be a rising sun or now a setting sun, in light of Chinas
growth and impact on the global economy.
As for this evening photograph, it is a reflection, an interpretation of Jacques Villegle work
and my paying tribute to an artist who continues to create in this form of art even fifty
years later.

Thanks for explaining your art and your thinking Egmont. I am one that does not understand modern art, but your pieces look nice, and explaining your reasoning behind the creation, and the purposes of it, helps me understand it a little. Thanks for sharing, Sig...

Another great capture from South Market Street. I cannot tell how much of this is due to your removal of some of the torn posters but the exposure of the large red lettering is the making of the image for me. Excellent!!

Dear Egmont...You have no need to explain. Great art will always speak for itself. :^) And this is beyond brilliant. What a masterpiece of photography this is. I loooooove the powerful whites in this and your composition....wow... All I know is, you've made me, someone who prefers figures, look twice at abstract art. If I could make this my favorite image ever, I would. It's that brilliant.-M :^)

Wonderful tribute and explanation. I had learned about that artist in college but had forgotten his very creative work. Thanks for the reminder and for sharing your take on a similar vision. Also, I agree with koosie.
