Description

Thanks for all who viewed and even more so to those who liked to add a comment yesterday to the Green valley between Todmorden and Hebden Bridge West Yorkshire UK.. One or two noticed on the distant hills was an object standing very central on the opposite side of the valley. I was in such a hurry that I completely forgot to add appropriate information. Today I can show you, here on that side of the valley stands Stoodley Pike, designed by local man James Green in 1856. The monument stands 110 feet high and was built to represent the end to the Crimean War. An earlier Pike stood here and was built in 1814 to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon and the surrender of Paris. (Napoleonic Wars). This earlier monument collapsed after being struck by lightning. Therefore the later Monument was built further in from the edge and a lightning conductor has been added. The balcony can be accessed by steps in a spiral fashion inside, but there is no lighting, no windows, it is advisable to use a torch. Thanks for viewing, ALAN

You forgot to mention also Alan there are quite a few of these 'Pike's' dottted about the country, I know there is one between Oldham & Ashton and I have seen quite a few others. I think there is another going over to Howarth if memory serves me right. This is an excellent shot, you can see its a bit draughty up there by the sheep's wool blowing in the wind. It be two overcoats colder up there than down in the valley. Great pov as well, real depth to it, the sheep the Pike and the hills in the distance. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!!

I too like the painterly feel of this one, dear Alan. We have walked to Pikes in the past when we lived in Manchester. Hartshead is one I remember. Sure looks bleak a'top the moors there. A wonderful work and thank you for information too. Hugs. Di. xx

What a view Alan. Did you hike up there? Looks pretty desolate and judging by the sheeps coat, pretty windy. Thanks for the background info, it always makes the picture, no matter how nice the picture is to begin with. What is the elevation of the top of the mountain, do you know? Sig...
