Description

North Head Lighthouse is in Cape Disappointment State Park, near the little town of Ilwaco, Washington. Its purpose is to mark the entrance to the mighty Columbia River for ships approaching from the north. The 65-foot tower stands on a 130-foot cliff. The lens was the first-order lens from Cape Disappointment, and was first lit in 1898. From several sites I checked for info: "North Head is one of the windiest places in the country. The lantern room windows were equipped with handrails for keepers cleaning the glass. Winds of 126 miles per hour were recorded on January 29, 1921, before the instrument blew away. In 1932, a wild duck was blown into the lantern, breaking through the glass and chipping the lens." Thanks for stopping by and any comments. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.

This is a beautiful shot. You've captured something the very distinctive pale blue sky of the Northwest. Its an elusive thing, and that special Northern light is everywhere here. I especially like the very pronounced gradient from warm sunlight on the left of the lighthouse to the cool blue ambient skylight on the right.

I especially like the sky in this and being able to see the sky through the top of the lighthouse. The red roofs add nice color. I don't think I've been to this lightouse, so thanks for the visit. You must be on vacation since you are posting this time of day. Enjoy your time off.

You couldn't have had better clouds if you'd painted them yourself. Wow. Awesome capture, my friend! I haven't been down there for years. Thanks for this beautiful photograph!

Very interesting style of construction. It has a Spanish flavor to it with the tiled roof and 'stucco' appearance. I see they replaced the fresnel lens with something much more modern. Marvelous low angle light and great moody clouds!

That buttery light is fabulous! It really defines the lines of the tower and warms with that great powdery blue sky.

So many memories from what I call Fort Canby State Park and had a cat named Canby....have a picture from that park 35 yrs. ago...trees were very small and spent my honeymoon there at the park and sleep in the back of a 56 Ford station wagon...I love that area and did a lot of camping over the years there...your picture of the lighthouse is very touching.

The functionality for Lighthouses is disappearing very rapidly, but they are such unique historical landmarks which are hopefully maintained for the future, but they are also such an interesting subject for photographers!!! Your captures of this lighthouse are fantastic, very well done, thanks for sharing and for the info!! Have a nice evening Henk

It's beautiful but wild and lonely. The sea looks really rough.
