Description

This unintentionally turned into a bit of a showcase for the excellent Realms Art products! The ecosystem, Spring Forest with Glades, comes from the Forest Terrains pack and the metals from the Metals and Alloys Megapack 1, both available from Cornucopia3D. However, I did add the charred ‘laser blasts’ over the top of the metal material on the gun towers. Mention must also go to the superb “Grid Modeller” product from Altuit which I used to create the cage-like structures over the walkways. Last, but not least, the ivy comes from Thomas Luft’s “Ivy Generator” – a free download if you haven’t already got it. The rest is mine though! . The ‘wispy’ looking trees are a result of some kind of corruption in the scene – no matter what I did I couldn’t get them to render correctly (not even repopulating the ecosystem), but I liked how they looked in the end and left them! Though this started out as just messing around with rusty and tarnished materials, very quickly a scene fell into place. So, a short story: The galaxy was filled with the remnants of war, from millennia-long low-level skirmishes within local regions, to instant planet-wide destruction between worlds. The history of armed conflict was sadly not limited to just mankind – many, many species took it upon themselves to annihilate each other in order to solve their differences. This abandoned fortress, relic of some long-forgotten conflict, was discovered by a colony ship on a far distant world. Clearly a brutal battle had taken place here as the forest floor was littered with burnt out wreckage not to mention many thousands of combatants who’s passing was only marked now by the remains of their pressure suits. Quite what such a formidable barrier was designed to protect against, and why it was defended/assaulted so viciously, was not clear to the discoverers of this battlefield as it was nowhere near a place of habitation or site of military significance. War is always futile and tragic, and this was no exception. It seemed fitting then that this battlefield should be claimed by the jungle so that Mother Nature, as always, was the final victor. There is quite a bit of detail in this, so you may like to view it full-size. Created in Vue 6i with no postwork. I really appreciate any comments you may care to leave!

Wild image, I like that feeling of the forest reclaiming what had been taken from it. Nice textures on the metal constructs, too.

Great construct IMHO. For myself, I like the depth in this, it's a difference from the POV's on your recent postings, which are terrific also.

One last squiz at the work of a fellow Melburnian before I head back to living in the U.K. Some fine work here. I especially enjoyed the 'spanish moss' effect and the complicated undulations of the ivy. All the best! Huw Carr Aug 2008
