Description

A couple of days ago, I went with a friend to a wildlife refuge not too far from my house. So close, and yet this was the first time I had ever been there. It's an amazing place. There are 1000's of geese that live there, they don't migrate. They leave in the morning to feed in pastures all over the place. When we got there, I saw fields and fields of them, but my camera has such a pathetic zoom, I wasn't able to get a foto that looked like anything. So, we walked and walked and came upon another most amazing sight. 100's of tundra swans, floating in this pond. They're just here for a short time, then they're on their way; I have no idea where they go. At any rate, I took some more pictures, and this one is the best. The zoom is still terrible, but you get the idea; they are spectacular!! I'm heading out at dawn tomorrow, I've been told they take off then for the pastures and the flight is stunning. Oh, these birds are huge, their wing span is about 6 feet, they look like small white planes when they land and take off!!

Since you called them tundra swans, I think they will eventually return to the areas north of Canada when Spring finally arrives. This is a beautiful capture, Marilyn, and the foreground has a bit of that 'tundra' look just for helping to identify the swans.

Wow! I have never seen so many swans in one place, I think eight together is my record for them. Excellent capture, despite your poor zoom. Bravo!!!!!

Very interesting, and a place I would love to meander through, snapping those lovely swans in all their serene elegance with my 12X zoom camera. Also interesting is that these avians appear to have lined up in an oval formation. A pecking order ritual of some sort? Tundra has something to do with cold, vast, treeless Arctic regions. Is that their place of origin? I know...questions, questions, questions!
