Description

Today, Sunday, the 27th of January, is a memorial day: Today, 63 years in the past, the Soviet "Red Army" delivered the killing camp AUSCHWITZ from the Nazi terror and freed the prisoners. Nearly 1,3 million persons were deported alone to this hell`s place on earth, and ca. 1,1 million of them, most of them Jews, but also Sinti and Roma, Homosexuals, War Prisoners and Slave Workers, Political Enemies of the Nazis and others, were murdered there, 900 000 directly and the others after a torture of hunger, deseases, cruelties and slave work...... Please imagine: After they came at dawn to you and took you away, together with your wife, your children, your grandparents and some neighbors, they bring you emmediately to the railroad station and they force you now to enter this cattle van - and you are pressed together with 200 other bodies, standing the whole time, because there is no room to sit down.... All of you are full of fear; nobody knows, where the journey ends, and when. There is no oven, no fresh air, no water and food, and no toilet..... Only one of this death trains could have nearly 10 000 prisoners on board, and the journey lasted from 2 days to a whole week. When they arrived in AUSCHWITZ or in another killing camp, often countless people have died in this waggons... Please remember: Today, exactly 63 before in the past, the destroying camp AUSCHWITZ was set free. We should never forget! Pic was taken here in Berlin in the "Deutsches Technik- Museum Berlin" , which owns a great railroad section. This waggon is part of it. If you are a visitor here in Berlin, please enter this car and feel the atmoshere for a minute. Thanks for your interest. Comments are welcome

I don't think it easy to forget what happened here/there. Some of us have family members to remember. Some made it out tormented broken forever some did not made it at all.

Awesome picture, for a terrible story, that happens all over again in our world. Sometimes under the radar, sometimes in front of our noses, but it keeps repeating...

Your stunning photo turns an ordinary cattle van into a place of terror. Thank you for sharing and telling us about this horrible time. Lets hope it is never allowed to happen again.

A terrible time in the history of the world but one that should never be forgotten. My daughter took modern history for one of her A levels and covered the Holcaust in great detail. She visited both Berlin and AUSCHWITZ as part of her studies. She is now 21 years old and still buys books about the war, she would rather read them than novels. Excellent capture and an interesting in depth narrative, thank you for giving us this jolt, to remember. Bravo!

This is an incredible photo and a well written account; more people need to stop and actually think about the atrocities that took place, so that such horrors can be avoided in the future. It seems, though, that in some areas, the message here IS forgotten. At any rate, this is a powerful and evocative photo, rendered all the more powerful by your written account! Fantastic and moving work!

Stunning capture. The horror and fear we really cannot imagine. How could those culprits sleep at night?
