Description

[best viewed full sized] Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides) This is an iridescent tropical butterfly found in Mexico, Central America, northern South America, Paraguay and Trinidad. The Blue Morpho Butterfly drinks the juices from rotting fruits for food. The wingspan of the Blue Morpho butterfly ranges from 7.5 cm to 20 cm.The entire Blue Morpho Butterfly lifecycle, from egg to adult is only 115 days. The larvae of Blue Morpho Butterflies are cannibals. The caterpillar blue morpho butterfly is red-brown with patches of bright green. The brilliant blue color in the butterfly's wings is caused by the diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings. It uses this to frighten away predators, by flashing its wings rapidly. This little fella kept giving me flashes of his brilliant blue back colour but never when I had the camera ready to capture it - maybe next time! Lol! This is my third and final butterfly upload for now - time to move on to something else! Thanks for looking and any comments and critique are more than welcome!

Having seen this beauty in full wing span, I can honestly say that the iridescence of the blue wings is amazing and yes, extremely difficult to capture as it is constantly fluttering in an effort to scare us away (no chance when camera is in hand LOL!!) I love the pose you have captured here and the focus is top notch on his face and body. Brilliant details and colours. A great capture and a great series of butterflies - so what will the next project be I wonder? Hugs. Chrissy xox

Bit more dof to bring out the top wing detail. Upping the ISO to 200-400 would have compensated. Fill in flash?
