Description
This is a Shand Mason Corridor Pump(circa 1890)
This type of portable fire appliance was designed and marketed for use in large country houses, where they could be stationed inside the building for use by domestic staff. The wheels would enable the pumps to be quickly taken to whatever part of the house was on fire but, as they were cumbersome to manoeuvre up and down stairs, they were generally positioned in passageways on each floor, hence the unusual name.
The bucket-type pump is mounted inside the barrel and a double-acting, fold-up lever positioned on the top, for use by two persons. The history of this exhibit, made by Shand, Mason & Co. of Blackfriars, London, is unknown.

I like this idea. My fire extinguishers are always running out of pressure and needing refilling whether used or not and I'd much rather lean on something like that where I can open it up and see if we are good to go in an emergency. Fabulous capture!
