Description

one from the backlog, i think using V3. not because it's _that_ old (though i do have some that are), but because i switch around among figures. i can see lots of things i could improve on now, but i think for now i'll continue to go forward instead of treading water. so let me know what you think, and how i can make this better, because (knowing myself) i'll probably return and improve on some elements in the future. thanks so much for viewing, and a double thanks for any comments and critiques people choose to give. i really appreciate anyone who takes the time to help me advance in my work.

lovely image & well done. I think the imnpact would be stronger if the the chains were pulled tight as opposed to loose. Also the joint on the right hip is a bit rough.

I like your "reaching" series very much :) I would work on joints (mentioned hip, but also arms and wrists) Is that dress painted? It looks great!

I agree with the comments about the chain and right thigh. Overall though, it's a really strong piece, and really well done! I disagree with you about not re-doing this piece. That ISN'T treading water--that's going forward. If you did the very same image, that's treading water. You've learned so much and come so far, it'll be very much better than now.

There are a couple of things in this image that I don´t like but it´s just a matter of personal taste. 1) I find her legs a bit thick in comparison with the rest of her body, and a bit short, too this may be caused by the camera angle, don´t know well I´m not asking for skinny supermodels, you know that´s not my style either. 2) I don´t see a correspondance between the shining light and the shadows on her body; for me, it´s obvious that the shining light is in the background _ behind her, and not above her, so this is somehow distracting to me. (You should consider a version with no shining light at all.) What I like of this image is what it perspires. There´s magic and grace, a concept and a message in it, things that are very hard to find these days.

just have to comment on this one: the light is coming from precisely from where the light above her is. the original render had a primitive to mark the place and the only light is from that position and some shadowless ambient light.

Very poetic, very beautiful. The apparent inconsistency of lighting, already referred, also disturbs me a bit. I first noticed it in the hands (if she is going for the light, the back of the hands should be in shadow). Also a bit disturbing is that it's not clear where the chains are (or were) locked in her body. All the rest is magnificent. I like the chains loose and not rigid. It makes me think she just set herself free. If they were rigid, it would mean she would be prisoner, and she doesnt deserve that. The urge to reach the light is more powerful than any chains. I would like to see some expression in her face. It seems just too neutral. The structure and the clouds are very well done, and so is her dress. Unlike other comments, I do like her body as it is. Overall, a charming image, full of poetry, beauty and desire for freedom. Well done.

yet again, i just have to comment on the misperception about the light. her hands would be shadowed if the light were in fact straight above her. and her shadow would be in the wrong place if she were straight up and down and towards the back. but despite how it looks, people's depth perception is thrown off much the same way it actually is in the sky or in other areas where there aren't land markers. and (mea culpa) i could work on depth in the form of fading and blurring. but the first thing to realize is that she's pretty far forward and up, and her body is actually straining pretty far forward at an angle. there's a lot of foreshortening happening. second, if the light were right above her, she'd be in the wrong position. most people can't jump at a perfect vertical, and certainly not for a running leap. so the light is in front and above, and fits the arc of her leap. her trailing foot is above but actually closer to the viewer than her shadow. the light is from the front and above. so the problem is entirely different.

An inspirational image. I'm sure most people felt the need to break free from whatever chains they feel hold them back, and reach for something seemingly unreachable. Its almost impossible not to feel empathy with her and wish she would succeed in her struggle... In that respect the image is a great success and whether or not the lighting is realistic or not, whether her leap is realistic or not etc. is irrelevant to me. I like the 'loose' chains, it adds fluidity to the situation and works well with the other soft curved shapes in the image., and the hopeful outlook as Rutra suggested. I would move the star a bit to the left for compositional reasons so it lies on the continuation of the line of her spine. Well done, very moving.
