Description

The Bald cypress tree is the classic tree of southern swamps. There, in its native habitat, it displays a peculiar habit of raising conical "knees" from its roots; some believe it is a way to help the roots get oxygen. Tennessee was once home to the largest (175-ft tall by 40-ft wide) and oldest (1,350 years old) bald cypress tree in the United States. The trees was struck by lightning in 1976. The lightning knocked the top out of the tree and the tree smoldered for two weeks! Unfortunately, that tree is no longer around! I've been told that the in the fall the needles turn a beautiful bright burnt orange color. Now, that's something to look forward to!
