Description
I saw this gator on the side of the road at Lake Martin. So I stop and took photos of it and went on to the art show where I won a 3th place ribbon.
I got to show and show someone the images I took on my camera. He showed me the babies gators lol I did not see them in the wild. If I did I would have rise the camera as I took close ups of the big gator. Igot some of the babies in the zoom photos but they was cut off so I uploaded a photo that shows the area and the babies.
I did not see the hole in the big mama side. I think it alive. The gator was not there in the morning as I pasted. I not going to touch it to see if it is alive that for sure. will go by the area more now to look for gators. And I was thinking of walking to that park on the other side of Lake Martin, No way now: gators are up and about.[they sleep like the bears in winter around here.
I be back later to night. I got to go and see someone in hositpal. I just had to upload my first gator shot, Ain't I a little kid that have to post a picture on the ice box?

You go boy! Thats a fair sized gator. There is a place on Bourbon St. that serves gator bites as a appiterizer (very yummy :)~ The hole looks more like a shadow of a bump sticking out of its side. Good one ;-)

Wow! It's a great shot of those babies, really, because you can see the scale of them and what they do, too. That hole just doesn't look right. Like maybe a scar because the skin around is grown in an odd way. Good you didn't check her out more-- if she was gone, it's a decent chance she actually was alive and that's not a fatal hole but a tired mom from taking care of all those babies. She also looks a little bit wet, and not entirely dried after crawling out of the water. But noooo! You do not neeeeeed to know! Hehe.

I zoomed in on the picture Jocko and it looks like there is something above the hole creating a shadow, as though some of the scaling has lifted, it could be something still in there. I saw the five babies right away but didn't spot the one above her head until I zoomed in. Excellent wildlife capture, certainly one to be proud of. Does Lake Martin have any wildlife wardens? If it does they might like to know where this was taken so they could look out for her maybe. Congratulations on the 3rd place ribon as well, don't know what sort of art you were showing, maybe you could show us on here? If you showed this image it may do better than 3rd. Excellent work all round. Bravo!!!!!

Nice one! The babies look great. The hole may not be too deep... the shadows are very strong here on there on the rest of its body and it's head looks slightly erect. Great shot! Congratulations on the 3rd place too!

A fantastic capture Jocko, I must say, until I read I did not see the babies at first. Oh wow you are so lucky to have caught this on camera in the wild. Even from a distance I would be nervous. I see the hole, thogh still looks alive to me!! But 7 babies!

I have to revise my comment somewhat. After speaking with Flannelman, who is right 99.9% of the time, I blew this shot up to 200% and saw the hole was very odd. I can’t see it as a shadow because of the way it cuts through the scales and in one spot a scale is slightly located behind the other. I still think it is a hole of some sort but not sure of how serious it might be or if it is truly an old one that has recessed to create a shadow within the depression. However, it is still underweight from not eating and I now figure that is because as Jocko says, it is coming out of hibernation. This is a very fine shot. The information in it is expansive and the babies, yearlings or a bit better, seem healthy. BTW, the record alligator was taken on Marsh Island, Louisiana and was 19 feet 2 inches. And, Louisiana now has a wild alligator season that harvests 28,000-35,000 alligators annually during the month of September. This season lasts approximately 30 days. I just love gators!
