Description

While out walking/hiking we sometimes come across places of historical value or interest. Here in the UK these places are often marked with a Blue Plaque. This one showing where Sir John Cockroft lived for 26 years of his life. The plaque reads - Sir John Cockcroft O.M., K.C.B, C.B.E.,F.RS,1897-1967 Lived here from 1899-1925, Scientist,Administrator, pioneer in the development of the peaceful uses of nuclear power, in 1932, with Dr.E.T.S.Walton, he was the first man to split the atom by artificial means. Joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics 1951. Honorary Freeman of the borough of Todmorden. I don't always get chance to thank everyone with a personal sitemail so - Thankyou to those who like to make a comment and those who have chosen to add my photo's to their favourites, always makes my day, thanks again Alan

Very interesting!! Just imagine, if we hadn't retired early, all this stuff would be out there and we never get a chance to see it.

Nice bit of local history you found here Alan, a new one for me as well, so thanks. I know the image is pretty straight but I have the feeling the house is built on a slight incline to the left. Excellent capture and information. Bravo!!!!!

Great image, thanks for the history. Its amazing how much history exists around us but we simply just walk by it everyday without really "seeing" it.

Beautiful and interesting shot. Places here have plaques as well, and once on a register of historic places, must be maintained and kept in good order. Beautiful place, such a wonderful old timey door.

Excellent capture and info of the history. Such an unassuming door, even though painted a pretty blue, but one would never guess unless the plaque were there. Stellar work!
