Description
Maybe we should ask who will watch over the watchers?
The Sentinel Pine lived for many long, long years, through fire and frost, standing watch over the high country from atop Sentinel Dome, a pluton of granite rooted strongly and deep. Men passed in a flicker, for what is our age to the age of a tree? Men took its name for man-made objects, such as bridges and journals. And men took its image.
It died, of drought, several years ago. It will be centuries before there is another tree like that, standing watch over the wilderness. Men forget and time passes.
A good then & now picture can be found here:

Who will watch now? I go up occasionally and stand looking out over the granite domes, but I live in the age of men, not of trees, and will quickly pass.
The pen & ink drawing was based upon my slide of the living tree. Time passes but the memories of trees remain.
