Description
I can watch the "War Kittens" Capital One TV ad over and over again - it's better than most of the programs it appears in (those outside the US, or who haven't seen it, can find it on YouTube - just search for "War Kitten").
After much thought as to what a War Kitten should look like, I realized the answer was staring me straight in the face - the SAK-MP robotic kitty included in Poser 7 as standard content.
So, take one SAK-MP and play around with the shaders a little. About the only real change, other than desaturating most materials to make them shades of grey, was to make sure that the eyes glowed red instead of blue. That's only for UN War Kittens.
I went back to Sanctum Arts products for the primary weapon. It's the Bone Mower that's part of the VAP Grim body armor for V3/M3. No changes there, it's just much, much closer to the ground. Be advised that when under attack by War Kittens, watch your ankles.
Scenery was one of the many variations on sci-fi corridors that DAZ sells, although it's barely visible.
The initial lighting set up, camera and atmosphere were "Icy Shine" from the "Fiat Lux" set by Saintfox. However, these were heavily modified - light colors changed, lights moved, an additional light or two added, the characteristics of the atmosphere changed, and the camera brought nearer the ground so that the subject was actually visible. I wanted a reddish tinge to the scene, to reflect a boarded ship on emergency lighting, and a lot of dust in the air, as would be the case after, say, a brief decompression during boarding.
Render settings were easy - everything turned up max, ambient occlusion on most lights, most lights raytraced, best possible quality. There's no postwork. Render time on a quad processor Power Mac G5 was on the order of 30hrs - to be expected when you throw a volumetric atmosphere, raytracing, ambient occlusion, etc, into a scene multiple times.
I think it turned out quite well. To me, it definitely says "War Kitten". Cute, but with the prospect of having serious damage inflicted on your ankles at any moment. I started out with a standard pose and tuned it so that the War Kitten was carrying the gun semi-convincingly, and deliberately cocked the head to one side, cute kitten style. That, combined with the unreadability of the face, was essential.
I must admit that I couldn't help but wonder if War Kittens would have real problems using weapons with laser sights, torn between the urge to perform their mission or chase the little red dot.

You did a masterful job here with the lights - I am truly amazed!! Be sure to save this set as the result is simply stunning. I am very happy that there are always some people who do their own experiments with what they bought - and who are not afraid of the one or other test!
