Description

I literally gasped out loud when I walked up to this atlas moth! It is native to China and southeast Asia and is the largest moth in the world. They can have a wingspan of nearly a foot across! This one was probably 8-10 inches across and is the largest insect I have ever seen in my life. Thanks for your views and comments.

Well I have to say I can see why you would be breathless at the sight of this, I wouldn't like it dive bombing me on a summers evening, and bouncing off the light bulb Phew! that would be dreadful. It certainly is an amazing creature, and the wings have the look of snakes heads, truly outstanding photography again Maria, hugs Jane xx

Beautiful shot! They really are huge, aren't they! We have a Butterfly Pavilion here, right down the street from our house, and have been in there many times. They've had one of these also, and I've got shots quite similar to yours. You're right about turning around and being surprised! Very nicely done!

Congratulations, Maria, on just seeing one of these for real, and even more so on getting such a great shot of it. I believe they have very short lifespans, so you were especially lucky.

Oh my goodness what a beautiful and rare find! The more I look at this beauty the more I find. The edges of the wings look like snake heads to me. Then you have the next layer that has such a 3d effect. You certainly took a beautiful shot! Well done!
