Description

This was taken at 07:00hrs today 3/23/08, Easter Sunday, location Rochdale, UK. Taken through the front window, which is double glazed, that is the main reason for the haze. Alan and I are going to Crich Tramway Museum tomorrow, I am hoping that this will be gone by then. The Monkey Puzzle(Araucaria araucana (Pehuén or Monkey-puzzle) is the hardiest species in the conifer genus Araucaria. It is native to central Chile and west central Argentina, and is an evergreen tree growing to 40 m tall and 2 m trunk diameter. Because of species' great age it is sometimes described as a living fossil. Araucaria araucana is the national tree of Chile.) We bought for our daughter Emma, when she was about two, she is now 21. We had it in a pot for about four years before planting it out front. The name Monkey Puzzle was first used :- The origin of the popular English name Monkey-puzzle derives from its early cultivation in Britain in about 1850, when the species was still very rare in gardens and not widely known. The proud owner of a young specimen at Pencarrow garden near Bodmin in Cornwall was showing it to a group of friends, and one made the remark "It would puzzle a monkey to climb that"; as the species had no existing popular name, first 'monkey-puzzler', then 'monkey-puzzle' stuck (Mitchell 1996). As a practical exercise, a monkey trying to climb one would not be so much puzzled as injured by the spiky leaf points. In France it is known as "désespoir des singes" or "monkey's despair". However, as monkeys are not found in the species' native range, the question does not arise. The species' Mapuche name Pehuén is now becoming more widely used as an alternative common name in English. Prior to 1850, it had been called "Joseph Bank's Pine" or "Chile Pine" in Britain, both somewhat confusing as it is not a pine. Information taken from Wikipedia. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make. May the sun shine down on you, where ever you are.

I couldn't believe it Jeff, it has been very very cold but the forecast told us that the East and the South would get the snow.(the forecast I read anyway!) When it snows I always try to get out to take some shots, I didnt feel like going this morning but I made myself lol because I expect the sun will clear it all by the end of the day. Glad you have posted one from your window, it shows that it wasn't the usual few flakes must have came down heavy for a while. Nice one Jeff and I'll meet you 6.00 am tomorrow outside my flat. looking foreward to it.

BBBBBBrrrrr! Rainy 1st thing and cold, but sunny/showers now lunchtime. You are brave planting that tree out, the ones in the cemetery down the road are HUMUNGOUS! Still, if it gets out of hand you can always set fire to it like I did to my palm tree, and then send for Dennis and his friends to see to it. It could be a great photo club event, with Alan and everyone near enough round for a sort of vertical barbecue. Hope you both have a super day tomorrow!

As far as I'm concerned, this is the ONLY way to see the snow, thru a window!! Though of course, when it snowed here a couple of months ago, I was out taking fotos!! Hope spring comes to your part of the world SOON!!

Nice shot of your tree, and such interesting information! I always imagined it was called a "monkey-puzzle" because it looked like so many tails all together. Who knew?
