Description

The Other Coast Today I dipped my toes Into another ocean This one is on the other side Of this big huge country I felt like a little kid Like it was Christmas Or my birthday Or some kind of holiday I wanted to laugh out loud Jump up and down Tell the world HERE I AM I¢ve never been here before See me I'm new here I love this place I love this world YOU live in Instead I quietly walked Up and down the beach Finding shells Watching people The birds the water The sun set in the wrong place Over the land instead of the sea But WOW it was just so wonderful Seeing this huge new ocean I am awed I am thrilled By it all 4/14/08 I'm still in Atlanta, but today drove to Savannah and Tybee Island. Seeing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time touched me in a way I wasn't expecting. These last few days have been so full of so many new things, new places, new feelings, and I am thrilled beyond belief.

Excellent prose Marilyn, I have never looked at it in this way before, from my home to the West coast is about 50 miles or just over an hours drive, the East coast is about 80 miles or about 1hr 40 minutes drive. So I could watch the sun rise in the East over the sea and then watch it set in the West over the sea. Thats what comes from living on a small island. Sounds like you are having a ball of a time, enjoy. Bravo!!!!!

I love this piece of writing, and yeah, don't you just love it when the sun sets in the wrong place! It's literally like going to a different planet at times. I love the sense of bold exploration you capture in this, all while throwing in these little tiny perceptual tidbits that keep the whole thing popping on surprising levels. There's great intimacy here! Fantastic work! And yeah, I wanna hear EVERYTHING about your trip.

I can imagine your thrill dipping your toe into the same ocean that held the likes of the pilgrims, explorers like Christopher Columbus, Ponce de Leon and Leif Erickson, millions of troops during WWI and II, European immigrants, slaves from Africa, U-boats, the Titanic, Queen Mary, Jaws, ad infinitum.
