Description

This image took 55 minutes and 52 seconds to render. It uses radiosity mainly because I wanted it to look natural. Anyway, the sun would have to be really strong for the whole cathedral be soooo illuminated ;-) Anyway, it may look not so interesting because I didn't want to use additional lights.

All these viewings and no comments... thats what you get for posting next to a naked chick render. This is an amazing image, it does have a quite natural feel to it. Good work!

Thank you all. The model is not mine. It is public domain (can't remember the site :-( ) It is there exactly to allow people to texture, light and render it using different techniques and applications. The texturing is all mine. It is made out from pieces of photos of the real Sibenik cathedral, all edited in Photoshop. The lighting was almost "natural" with a few tricks I have been learning to speed up radiosity ;-)

Here are the settings I used: Strenght: 200% Accuracy: 45% Prepass Size: 1/1 Diffuse Depth: 2 Stochastic Samples: 60 Min. Resolution: 250 Max. Resolution: 600 The Strenght was set high because this is an interior, mainly illuminated by exterior lighting, so the strenght of the radiosity effect must be strong enough to see some lighting at all. I lowered the Accuracy because the kind of illumination, associated with the kind of textured didn't demanded too much detail. This way I could speed up the render a bit. For final renders the Prepass Size should always be set to 1/1. Since it is an interior without much detail, only 2 levels of Diffuse Depth was required. This increases speed tremendously. The Min. and Max. Resolutions were found, more or less, by trial and error. I could have calculated aproximate values using calculations of the largest scene object and the size of my render but I found it faster this way (I got lucky ;-) Anyway, the Min. and Max. Resolutions differ from scene to scene. The other tricks I used was to place two interior Omni lights. They are very dimm and set to a linear falloff. They are only there to assure there are enough "photons" inside the cathedral. This way, the radiosity engine has some material to work with. I could not trust only on the few "photons" from the "sun" that entered by the small windows of the cathedral. Since the interior light near the dome chamber was too near the wall, it was setting it too bright. So, I also placed a small sphere, cutted into a dome shape, behind the light. It was set to be seen by rays and to cast shadows but not to be seen by the camera and by GI. This way I got a omni-semi-direction light that spreadded "photons" only on the direction I wanted. These are the main tricks I used. I'm still learning lots more, each day.

The radiosity-fx is stunning! Also the textures are excellent! ThanX! ~{o;)

I gonna take that model just and see, that on this site is asked for posting rendered examples from this model there or links, please, do all so, if you use it, it's the only thing the modeler wants ... there are maps also, and RUIMAC: post the converted cinema-files there, it would be great to the others, and you even did the work (if something sounds funny, it's only my English ;-)

I think the lightning is quiet sufficient. I have tried it myself, and its hard to get it right. Nice job.The adress to sibenik is: http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~sibenik2/

To Erik: Where do you want me to post the C4D file? Did I understood what you meant?

This is an amazing render. I nearly gave it 9 for the excellent rendering, seeing as the model isn't by you. But having seen the Lightwave original, I have to say that I like this one a lot better. I would have done some volumetric light through the windows though. But that's just me.

I did it in another render. But, since the purpose was a FAST render, I dropped that in this one ;-)
