Description

The best thing about the International terminal at Vancouver's airport, is this magnificent Jade Canoe sculpture, by Bill Reid, also known as the 'Spirit of Haida Gwaii', which is another name for the Queen Charlotte islands. It provides the focal point to the entrance of the International Terminal. The bronze sculpture features legendary Haida creatures paddling a boat that "goes on, forever anchored in the same place." The sculpture was first created in 1986 as a 1/6-scale clay maquette and enlarged to a full-scale clay model in 1988. In 1989, a mold was taken from the full-scale model and the sculpture was cast in plaster for further refinement. Later that year, the plaster pattern was completed and sent to the Tallix Foundry in New York. The finished sculpture is approximately six meters long (20 feet), four meters high (13 feet) and 3.5 metres wide (11 feet). The first bronze casting was completed in 1991 and is (now) on display in the Canadian Chancery in Washington, D.C. It is called The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Black Canoe. The second casting, The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe, was unveiled at the Museum of Anthropology in 1994. During the summer of 1995, the sculpture was on display at Vancouver's Granville Island for public enjoyment and education. In its final setting, against the dramatic backdrop of the glass "Wave Wall", The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe provides the focal point to the entrance of the International Terminal. I hope you are as impressed with this sculpture as I am, and I thank you for visiting.

I like art a lot in general but some time things are not what some one would call art, it is impresive statue my friend and it looks realy nice, it reminds me of things that old civilizations did thanks.

This is an amazing sculpture, amazingly captured. I love the various, subtle colors you captured and the reflections work well for me. In all, this is a wonderful shot of a wonderful sculpture. It's beautifully captured and presented.

Wow, lots of activity depicted in this fine capture, Chris! And, yes, I am very impressed by this magnificent sculpture of the jade canoe and its band of dedicated paddlers. But I have a feeling this particular sculpture would sink like a rock if placed in the water.

an outstanding find and capture. The uncluttered space around it is great since this really has so much going on in it.

What a fabulous bronze! That's absolutely gorgeous. I've never seen it before, since I have no cause to be in the Vancouver airport. Beautiful photography! You've captured the details in fine style.
