Description

These are likenesses of the Welsh Moonflower in positive and negative phase. The original sketches were made at great personal risk, which I hope was worth the effort. The Welsh Moonflower [floraluna cambria maritimis] grows sparsely on sheltered south facing cliffs. It blooms only at full or new moon - positive phase at full, negative at new. Flower colour is vivid and very variable, and although the picotee petals are extremely delicate and easily disturbed, the stems are unbelievably tough. The lacy edge to the petal is made by the larva of the rare Cliff-hanger Moth - an excellent biological example of commensalism. If you're foolhardy enough to scale the sheer cliff-faces where they grow, you will need wire-cutters to gather them ... that is, if you can stand the eerie wailing sound [much like a distressed infant] which the plants emit when severed and which attaches itself permanently to the perpetrator. I would advise the curious among you to content yourself by viewing the picture ...

There is a moonflower in the tropics that opens to full bloom with the moon, then fades with the dawn. Your images, and accompanying story are fascinating. A flower that wails when cut is so tragically romantic. CC

Beautiful flower and such interesting information about it. I've never heard of a flower that cries, kind of sad.

What a story and a touch of a fable as I neared the end of your text. Don't tell me, I don't want to know if it's true or not...
