Description

#5 from my Passion Play photos. My favorite thing about this one is that the light bounces off the tunic of Jesus to glow onto the disciples behind him. It reminds me of the sun's rays and how it can sneak in and light up even the darkest and most remote places. Thanks for your time. Comments welcome. Jodie Please visit my personal website...

Ah, the play of light and shadow! I love it! The radiance is captured supremely, and the vague nimbus around the brightest spots is what draws me the most. Again, you've captured a great sense of drama here.

Great lighting. The position of the actors are good and form a nice block that keeps the eyes locked in on the subjects of the shot.

Full-size, your images always reveal subtleties: The silhouette is beautiful and utterly theatrical, meaning you captured a soul in the excruciating moment of a theatrical epiphany; and even if one doesn't know Christianity, they'd know that this Jesus is not only illumined but in some sort of deep agony, because you caught him in a moment of surrender, troubled, offering yet truly pained. Photographers will know how precious such moments are because they pass so quickly before the camera; but others will know that it is precious, regardless, which is ultimately what this moment is about. And yes, the light seems to glow into everyone's space, a kind of divine 'butterfly effect' (which I know you're so moved by in life); and that 'nimbus'—as Chipka aptly put it—seems to sneak up all over the place as if you dipped your hand in light and gently ran it across the photo, leaving it 'touched'. More true theater from you, all spotlight & darkness, the background like the Renaissance masters, and the students giving an innocence so much more suitable to this moment than the posturing of professional actors. You must've felt what you photographed, and I'll be sad when this magical series is over.
